The file comes from this site and nowhere else: https://clearnote.app/downloads/ClearNote-1.0.5-6.dmg. The size and checksum above are read from the same update feed (appcast.json) that the app itself checks, so they always describe the file being offered.

Install

  1. Open the disk imageDouble-click the downloaded .dmg. macOS checks it as it opens.
  2. Drag ClearNote to ApplicationsDrag the ClearNote icon onto the Applications shortcut in the window, then eject the disk image.
  3. Open ClearNote and sign inChoose Sign In with Google. If your address has not been let in yet, the app says so and points you to the request form.

ClearNote checks this site for new versions shortly after it opens and once a day while it stays open, and offers the update when there is one. What changed in each version is in the changelog.

iPhone and iPad

The iPhone and iPad app is built and tested, but it is not released. There is no TestFlight invitation and no App Store listing yet, so there is nothing to install and no link here to a store page that does not exist. When that changes, this page and the changelog will say so. It will need iOS 18 or later.

In a browser

The web app at clearnote.app/app works in any current version of Safari, Chrome, Firefox or Edge, for people who have been let in: notes, notebooks and tags, search, tasks, attachments, import, Ask ClearNote, and full export. Scanning and text recognition are Mac and iPhone features and are not in the browser.

Why sign-in and not sign-up

ClearNote holds people’s notes, and the responsible way to start doing that is with a small number of accounts we can actually look after. Open sign-up during a beta means an unknown amount of other people’s data on day one. So: no sign-up form anywhere, and every account created deliberately.

In the meantime

If you are planning a move from Evernote, the useful thing you can do now is export your notebooks as ENEX. Those files are yours, they are readable by other tools, and having them means you are no longer dependent on Evernote staying available — whatever you eventually import them into.
